The fantastic book including Mystic #1 - 4 arrived home so I suppose it will be soon (if not now) to your local store, so GO BUY IT!

It's the perfect gift for anyone starting on comics or that hardcore fan that wants something well done. And if you already have it go get the TPB, it's got lots of sketches and you can give the comic books to someone you care, sure he's going to like it.

Wow, what a mess, after those good days I have to keep my schedule rolling and there's no way I can do it.

The guys making Expocomic possible did an AMAZING work, everybody knew what they had to do and did it perfect, a prodigy and a pleasure to be there.

As much as some friends, click... well, you know.

I bought some good books and saw friends I hadn't seen in a long while. Food! Lots of food, crazy lots of good food with good people to share.

A cool one too from Read/RANT:
David and Alvaro Lopez are turning in fantastic work on this title, creating distinct characters, elaborate fashions and an ornate, lovely fantasy setting. Colorist Nathan Fairbairn is also doing an exceptional job, his soft color palate giving the book a unique, memorable look.

And a curious podcast here, check from 1h 02' 50" till 1h 09' 25", thanks for your love!

But I'd like to finish with the words of Grant (McLaughlin?) in The Weekly Crisis:
The wonderful world that G. Willow Wilson and David Lopez have created is the perfect combination of Victorian sensibilities, steampunk style, and magical imagination, and the story they're telling is timeless. I hope they collect this book in trade, because more people should have the chance to read this story.

David Lopez’s pencils are great! It’s hard to work with a comic so lacking in action sequences, but he made this talky issue work. His line work is clean and crisp. His facial expressions are emotive. His style reminds me of early Carlos Pacheco and even more of Mike McKone, both of whom are favorites of mine.

Multiversity Comics:
And then there’s the art; the wonderful, wonderful art.
And after that they compare me to Quitely... thank you, very much, but he's still a huge master and I'm... well, not.

Bleedingcool:
David Lopez (of Fallen Angel and Hawkeye/Mockingbird fame) is the latest in a great string of artists to work on the book. He has taken great care to find an individual body type (and language), face design and fashion sense for each character and provides and it adds a great layer of quality in this issue that is so focused on the characters and their interactions.

The Guide likes it too and in X-Man's Comic Blog they're more than happy.

At Comics Vanguard they liked it but in a milder way... but at My Latest Distraction they are more effusive.

Good words from Comics Nexus/ Inside Pulse and House to Astonish too.

Four out of five in CBR:
The art team of David López, Álvaro López and Val Staples provide a story that is wide open when it needs to be and filled with details as necessary. López and López provided some great art on “Hawkeye & Mockingbird” and drew my attention there.

Magic can happen, but only for one of them.

Seems like people are liking the book and it's getting fantastic reviews. Thank you all! Here a few extracts of the reviews, please, go visit them.

Patrick Shand's Writerly Writings:
I hope that another storyline follows this one, and that the G. Willow Wilson & David Lopez team comes back to give us more of these characters and this world.

CX! Pulp:
This art team has given us a book that seems to blend in a little Dickensian England with a little Eastern Mysticism.

Irrelevant Comics:
Mystic is G. Willow Wilson's fantastic mini-series that I wish could go on forever instead of being a mini-series. It may be the best book of the year, due in no small part to the wonderful art by David Lopez and gorgeous colours by Nathan Fairbairn.

Giant Killer Squid:
These panels are just so bright and happy. It’s perfect though: from the over exaggerated differences in the apprentices to the sparkles in the mystical elements. There’s life in the art. There’s a reason I read it as if I were watching an animated film. I just keep turning the page waiting for that song and dance number.

IGN Comics:
As equally great as the characterization is the art. David López set a high bar in the first issue and has managed to exceed it with each subsequent installment. His ability to convey raw human emotion – or someone trying to hide their feelings – is uncanny. The characters live and breathe on the page and earn some true reader empathy thanks to his talented hands. He even makes you feel bad for the wayward robot as it crawls on its hands and knees oozing corrupted aether from its mouth.

In the previous two issues, Wilson did a great job of intertwining the stories of Giselle and her sister Genevieve, but here Viv is missing for all but a single page. Viv is acknowledged and missed by her sister, but her absence is felt. However, it is a credit to Wilson's ability to create a character so endearing that you miss her when she is gone.

The Weekly Crisis:
I have fallen head over heels in love with this mini-series. While my constant clamouring for all age titles might get a little old, that doesn't change how good this book has been. The story of Giselle and Felice has been charming as all get out, and I can't help but smile when I see this book roll around on the solicitations.

ACB, A Comic Book Blog:
If there’s one thing that worries me is that there’s only one more issue left in the series.

Comic Booked.com:
This is hands down one of the most impressive new titles on the shelves. Amazing art, immersive plotting and even a chuckle or two.

Covers to Sleep Under:
Lopez is an undisputed master of facial expressions, and as such, the emotions of each character come at you unapologetically. And it’s so, so good.

Seems like things have speeded up since the summer ended and suddenly we're in full throttle.

My New Mutants are a reality and finally I can share some stuff, check this Marvel.com interview.

The great Tim Miner liked Mystic very much and has drawn a nice Giselle with the family, he invited me to share the experience of Five Minutes Marvel. You should try it, it's FUN!

It's always a pleasure to go back to Selina

And Vicente cheated me big time to get a nice sketch. I choose Catwoman with all my support to Guillem March who is in the middle of a storm right now.

Mystic #2 Reviews

The mega relaunch of the DC books has taken lots of atention of the media, but those who have taste for good comics and picked Mystic #2 seems like they like it!

IGN Comics UK:
Wilson, Lopez, and the rest of the art team turn in an astounding second installment of this wondrous mini-series that has shown just as much promise as other rebooted Crossgen titles such as Sigil and Ruse. All signs point to this title delivering an equally well-scripted character piece brought to life by incredible art.

A ComicBook blog:
On the art side, David Lopez’s pencils are nice and smooth and pretty to look at. Coupled with Alvaro Lopez on inks and Nathan Fairbairn’s right, bright colors, the series might be the best looking of the bunch as well. Of course if the Amanda Conner and Paul Mounts cover doesn’t at least catch your eye on the rack, you might not be looking in the right places because leave it to them to give you a gorgeous cover.

ComicBuzz:
Despite a week with huge blockbuster titles, Mystic was the one that impressed me the most.

PDX Comic Geek:
The artwork is flawless and immediate, granting the perfect vehicle for this narrative. The only fault I can find is that I must wait another month for part 3.

Comic Book Therapy:
The art in this issue continues to impress me. Wonderful vibrant colors and an over all animated feel. I look forward to seeing how the story progreses.

Patrick Shand's Writerly Writings:
The first issue was clearly no fluke. Writer G. Willow Wilson and artist David Lopez continue to bring the pure concentrated awesome in the second issue of Mystic.

If you're at all a fan of quality storytelling, imaginative narratives, and comics written for all ages, you owe it to yourselves to give this one a gander.

Fantastic fanGirls:
For now, I encourage anyone who might be remotely interested in this kind of story to give it a try – either in issues, which might still be on the stands at your local comic shop, or in the inevitable trade. If you’ve been craving a book about magic, female friendship, plucky orphans, class conflict, or the talent divide between opposites, I assure you that this comic is where you want to be.

As you can see, then, this fantasy story is isn’t interested in helping the reader escape from real world issues! But it’s nevertheless rendered with buckets of charm, thanks in large part to the wonderful, cartoony art of David and Alvaro Lopez.

We are finally cowboys:
The art is cartoony, expressive, and just really damn good. Wilson establishes the characters and the world without losing sight of the actual story, something most writers fail to do. The friendship is poised to shatter because one’s dream was denied and given to the other. This is really good. ****½.

Comics Alliance:
Their facial expressions and body language are top notch. G. Willow Wilson turns in a great script, too, that feels a little like Cinderella with a telegraphed, but still great, twist. I wasn't expecting to be into this series so much, even if I did already like the creative team, because of the steampunk aspect, but the craft put into this book completely turned me around. This is the kind of comic I like to see -- a fresh idea with killer execution.

Long Box Review:
The art, however, is wonderful. David López (pencils), Álvaro López (inks), and Nathan Fairbairn (colors) do a fantastic job at conveying this world in a very accessible manner.

Fight for comics:
I have always loved how well David López’s draws women. He does not over emphasize a characters sex appeal on every panel like so many artists fall victim of on todays stands. Instead he draws characters with huge emotion and life which makes them leap off of the page.

XVI Avilés comic convention!

I'm going to be to Avilés Convention from tomorrow 'till the thing ends.

It's one of my favorite dates for comics, a small town with lots of authors and lots of friends all mixed up, you have time to talk to other artists and you can talk to the guys that read comics.

But if you are one of those weirdos that don't loke comics you can still enjoy Asturias, one of the best places in the whole world, good food, nice enviroment, historic places and some really amazing human beings.

A.V. Club
The true star of Mystic is penciler David López, who turns in the best work of his career with his impeccably detailed renderings of Hyperion and its inhabitants.

Covers to Sleep Under
As a whole, I loved this first issue. Who’s the colorist on this—Nathan Fairbairn? I’m unfamiliar with him, but he deserves a major nod—the colors on this book are FANTASTIC. Wow—just excellent stuff. Really gives life to Lopez’s pencils. It kind of reminds me of something out of a Disney movie—it feels like these characters can just leap off the page any minute and start singing a musical number about their hardships. I don’t know about you, but that’s a plus for me. Bring on issue #2.

Comic Booked
The art is simply gorgeous, David López is producing panels that look like shots captured from an animated movie. It is rare that the interior art should outstrip the inviting cover work, but open this book to its first page and the reader is sure to be blown away by how detailed, colourful and beautiful the magical steampunk universe of Mystic is.

All in all, I really liked this book. I hope it finds its hands into the sort of readers that would probably like it the most.

The art team of David and Alvaro Lopez give us a colorful, animated look to the book that really add to the magical feel of the world. there is also a wonderful expressiveness to the characters , especially the girls.

Mystic features great art by David Lopez. There’s lots of fine detail in his depictions of Hyperion that further build the world but it’s his character design that really shines.

Evil Squirrel Comics
The artistic team of David Lopez, Alvaro Lopez and Nathan Fairbairn do a spectacular job bringing the world of Hyperion to life in a vibrant way, giving the city a pulse and magic of its own.

Comic Related
It's an exceedingly simple story, but Wilson makes it work. Also on their A-game is Mystic's art team, David and Alvaro Lopez with Nathan Fairbairn on colors. The book is softly colored and cartoonish, lending it a bright, distinctive look. The characters are fantastically designed and exceedingly well-illustrated - just look at the facial expressions of Genevieve and Giselle on that final panel. Mystic is a very, very pretty book.

The Mondo Comics
The main characters are fun and well-developed, the story is compelling and I can’t wait to see where it goes. David and Álvaro López do a wonderful job with the artwork, I recommend anyone look at the faces the characters make throughout the books and note how expressive and fun they are. Plus there are robot dogs!

The Outhouse:
Mystic #1 is a well-constructed first issue of a comic that promises another great modern day fantasy story, with strong characters and a great hook that starts to play out in the last few pages. What's so remarkable is how much this issue introduces. There are class issues at play here, as well as a friendship drama and great use of a fanstastical setting that really springs to life. It's a very lively comic, and hopefully the rest of the story can live up to this strong issue.

A friend of mine asked for a CatWoman and I wanted to try my new Letraset markers, I just have a green palette of those so the background is done with my classic Touch markers.

The Letraset blend much much better which is cometimes good sometimes bad.

X23 #6 It's great when things work great

I've been doing some fill-in work while waiting for my new tailor made Marvel project (which I'm really happy to say I've started), I did some pages for X23 #5 and #6.

It's been nice to work with Marjorie M. Liu and the Mutants... Mutants are fantastic. Well, since I was there just for a few pages I couldn't do too much, but fortunately, there's people out there who appreciate it:

Here you can see a cover that works better as a cover(yellow), the characters are really separed from the background and the comic book pops out of the self.

August 24th died one of my favourite filmmakers, Satoshi Kon at the age of 46, he had a really humane approach to storytelling and was technically far far ahead of the rest.

I'm really sorry for the death of a genius.

He had the time to write this letter as a farewell... take some time and read it, and think about the meaning of everything's in there.

I did and it was sad.

And good.

“New Avengers: The Reunion”, which this series spins out of, was one of the highlights of last year, with smart, action-packed writing from Jim McCann casting Hawkeye and Mockingbird as pair as superhero spies/spouses reminiscent of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. And Mrs. Smith. And to my delight, the opening scene of this issue kicks off in exactly that vein. Too often, miniseries granted a full return miss what made the original great, but McCann has nailed it here, quickly reintroducing the setup and setting about expanding the world of the two heroes.
In some cases, that means introducing their family and friends – Hawkeye gets a great scene, sparring with the Captains America – and in others, it’s reintroducing the villains the pair have collected, such as Crossfire and the Phantom Rider. Neither of those villains is especially A-List, and while Crossfire struggles to appear like a credible threat, I’m immediately interested in the new Phantom Rider McCann has created. At times it verges on being a little too comprehensive, but by the end of the issue, the plotlines and characters are all in place, and it feels like the story has begun.

For his part, David Lopez’ art is fantastic: bright, clear storytelling, fluid and natural-looking figure work, and a brilliant aptitude for the sort of action sequence McCann is writing. The world is detailed and realistic, while Clint and Bobbi are both confident and sexy without being gratuitously drawn.

For its part in the Big Avengers reshuffle, everything about the issue screams “Heroic Age”. It feels like a new beginning, and it keeps up the high standard already set by “Avengers” and “Secret Avengers”. The characters might not be the obvious choice of series lead, but McCann has written a book that seems original without being unfamiliar, and feel traditional while retaining a modern edge.
Literally the only thing that upsets me about Hawkeye and Mockingbird is the feeling that it’s far from being a sure thing. In many ways, this series has the potential to be the next “SWORD”, the next “Captain Britain”, the next “Power Girl” -- a smart, funny, fresh take on superheroics that winds up ending before its time. This series deserves a long and entertaining run. Let’s get the word out.

First issues are always a moving target -- but when it comes to Hawkeye and Mockingbird #1, let's just say that with humor, action and some smooth retelling of the Marvel mythos, Jim McCann and David Lopez have definitely scored a bullseye. While it's a direct sequel to the duo's New Avengers: The Reunion, it's a strong opener that will hook readers into the exploits of one of the Marvel Universe's premier power couples.
Ultimately, I think Jim McCann's biggest strength in this book is that he lays out the foundations of Clint and Barbara's future stories by introducing a slew of plot threads with a surprising amount of lightness. It also doesn't hurt that he opens with a fantastic action sequence, one that shows that there's still a few more trick arrows in Hawkeye's quiver -- and that a bow and arrow can be pretty darn cool in the hands of the right writer. But there's a lot of good plotting here, whether it's the spy stuff or the family drama, all of which could lead to some great conclusions.
And David Lopez. The speed and emotion he conveys in this book -- combined with the superb atmosphere generated by colorist Nathan Fairbairn -- shows that he's just as inhumanly enthused about this project as McCann is. He absolutely sells some great moments here, especially with Hawkeye's bag of trick arrows and how they interact with an environment. Something I really enjoyed about Lopez's work was also the fact that you could tell that the characters were wearing a mask -- as in, they have the same facial qualities both with and without. It's a subtle touch, but it's one that's really appreciated.
With bows and arrows, spies and guns, heroes and villains and the World Counterterrorism Agency, there is a lot for Jim McCann and David Lopez to work with for Hawkeye and Mockingbird -- and after reading this first issue, I am definitely excited to see where it goes next. It's lighthearted swashbuckling with romance and intrigue, and ultimately it's got the same infectious fun factor as a book like Incredible Hercules. Just like the skills of its titular heroes, this is a book you can't miss.

Comic Nexus (8/10):
One thing I noticed when I read Jim McCann’s Reunion mini last year is that, well, he really gets the character of Clint Barton. That isn’t to say he doesn’t get Bobbi Morse, rather I just haven’t read much of anything else with her in it. But he creates a dynamic between the two that does manage to intrigue me past the fact that I just happen to be a Hawkeye fan. I’m interested in the relationship between these two super heroes, who were married, who were divorced, one who was replaced with a Skrull and presumed dead, one who was killed by Disassembled. Now, both are alive, both are together, and they’re trying it out again for the first time. McCann keeps exploring the mysteries of Mockingbird, from her origin, to the sins of past exploits, to just how far she is willing to go to retain the autonomy that her Skrull induced paranoia requires.
In other words, McCann piles on the depth and potential for depth with this character who was most likely long forgotten by many fans. He’s doing his best to make us as readers care that we’re reading a book with her in the name, and he does a pretty good job. I’m interested in what happens to her next.
Clint gets love too, not to be over shadowed by Bobbi, but she does get the most of it. Though to make up for it we get a pretty cool scene of him talking to Steve Rogers….which I think is their first real conversation since Steve came back. McCann definitely nails the dynamic between the two. He balances Clint well, starting him out with the superheroics, and working him towards a very human moment…not spoiling. It was cool.

David Lopez does a great job on art here. Characters look right, action is smooth, faces look great. Definitely the right choice for art on this book.

Weekly Comic Book Review (C-):

The Story: On the road to reconciliation and renewing their relationship, Hawkeye and Mockingbird take time to bust up an arms deal while charting their own course in this new Heroic Age.
The Good: Diehard fans of the Hawkeye/Mockingbird duo will undoubtedly love the existence of this book, and I can’t blame them. There has always been a certain undeniable, geeky fondness for this dynamic duo over the years, and Hawkeye and Mockingbird have gone on to garner much well-deserved admiration from fans and creators. To be honest, I like having them back in the Marvel Universe, and I think their presence adds immense credibility to this notion of a Heroic Age.

What really drew me to this issue was the ridiculously attractive art from Team Lopez. David’s pencils and Alvaro’s inks are sleek and engaging, and they are clearly talented at choreographing some sweet-ass action sequences. The opening chase scene through the streets of New York was every bit as intense as a summer blockbuster movie, and I mean that in the best way possible. These guys are good, damn good, and I honestly think they can take this comic to heights of Greatness.

The Not So Good: I’ve more or less come to expect a certain degree of mediocrity from these Heroic Age relaunches, as creators need to re-establish the status quo and devote an issue to reminding us who their respective characters are and what their Mission is. And to be fair, that is certainly present here in this issue. But there is something too, something slightly more annoying. McCann’s script draws heavily on the extensive continuity of these characters, but slightly to a fault. Crossfire? The Phantom fucking Rider!? Come on. Hawkeye and Mockingbird have battled their ways through death, an alien invasion, and the dark reign of an utter fucking psychopath to find their way into each others arms and the best McCann can give us are some D class antagonists?
I felt like McCann had too much to say about the continuity that he grew up on and contributed nothing to the continuity that new readers are growing up on. This is the perfect point for him to leave his mark on these characters and say something Original about them, but his script reeked of a zealous adherence to things that came before and a reluctance to chart his own course. It literally reads like a guy who’s been jonesing to write comics about Hawkeye and Mockingbird since he was a teenager and has finally been given the chance to do so even though he’s got nothing authentic to say about either of them. Which isn’t to say he doesn’t, but after reading this issue I doubted whether or not I wanted to continue with it, which is a huge shame considering how much I love these characters! Given everything that Hawkeye and Mockingbird have been through recently, is it too much to ask for stories that deal more with their recent history than things that occurred years ago that no one gives a shit about? I want to see McCann chart a clear and engaging direction for this book, otherwise I really won’t see a reason to continue buying it.
Conclusion: I love Hawkeye. I love Mockingbird. You’d think I’d love seeing the both of them in their own comic, but wow did McCann take a great idea and do absolutely little with it. He wrote this like a 15 year-old fanboy giddy at the thought of taking on characters he grew up reading, but neglected to say anything about them that hasn’t already been said many other times by many other writers. After reading this, I’m less inclined to buy the second issue, and will probably wait for the graphic novel to see if he can salvage this book. Frankly, I was a bit disappointed.

One year ago Mockingbird came back to life. Now, for little ol' me, I had never read anything with her or anything. She had died when I was only one and a half years old. The passing mention every now and then gave me an idea that she existed though. When New Avengers Reunion came out last year, I couldn't read it as a result, because as much as I love Clint Barton, I didn't care about Mockingbird (And I didn't like the art, which I now retract). Having now read it though, gotta say, I was excited for this issue.
Hawkeye & Mockingbird jumps right into the action with some impression archery (Hawkeye ftw!) and great gunplay. The two of them stop a theft, realize Crossfire was behind it, meet Phantom Riders decedent, and meet up with the W.C.A. (World Counterterrorism Agency). Overall, pretty basic story structure with and ending that may have been too well hinted at ten pages prior, cause I saw it coming from a mile away.
Even with this less than groundbreaking story though, Jim McCann clearly knows these characters. Mockingbird is incredibly hard-edged and driven, a lean mean terrorist-fightin' machine. What I really like is that between this and N.A.: The Reunion you get a real sense of how closed off Mockingbird is with only the occasional opening up. Clint here is gold, having grown into much more of a man than he used to be and becoming a "boy scout". Seeing him train with Cap' and Steve was a nice little touch that I loved.

As for the art, well I don't know how I didn't like it a year ago, because I love it now. David Lopez manages to take like 5 other artists and blend them together into one style that works great. His action and subtlety especially shine through here, like in one series of panels where the main action dictates dialogue and two people talking, but if you pay close attention, Clint is deheading an arrow to use barehanded. Nice touch.

Overall, I saw this issue coming a mile away. Nothing outstandingly new, but everything here was done well. I've got a good feeling about this book, it has the potential that few others have. 4 out of 5.

Too Dangerous for a girl:
The debut issue of Clint Barton and Bobbi Morse's first ongoing series opens with the partners in crimefighting on the trail of gun-runners. It's tough to make a high-speed chase work on the comics page, but it's pulled off here. Hawkeye and Mockingbird use bow, baton and banter to win the battle, but the war is far from over, with an old enemy revealed to be up to ... something.
Aiming to find out just what, are the super-spies in Bobbi's World Counterterrorism Agency, an engaging bunch including obscure Marvel soldier of fortune, Dominic (a lot of energy went into naming me) Fortune. Hawkeye, meanwhile, is en route to pissing Bobbi off by going behind her back in a bid to offer help she hasn't asked for, and Bobbi is en route to pissing Clint off with her creative approach to covert agency finance. What's more, a figure - or rather, a spirit - from the couple's past emerges to spark big trouble.
It's difficult to type while I'm applauding. Writer Jim McCann has scripted the perfect superhero debut issue. The leads are introduced via an action scene showcasing their skills and relationship, and when things calm down we get background and more leisurely introductions, of characters and plots. There's even room for a scene with Hawkeye and fellow Avengers Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, pointing out that former cocky upstart Hawkeye is today one of the most respected of heroes. McCann doesn't try any tricksy narrative tricks, concentrating on providing a good solid story, simply - but very well - told. It's superheroics with a spy sensibility, comprising action, emotion, humour and mystery.
Clint narrates this issue and the idea works well - I'm no fan of dual narrations, a la Superman/Batman, so Clint and Bobbi handing the perspective back and forth would be an ideal approach.

Artists David and Alvaro Lopez aren't trying to dazzle with visual pyrotechnics - like McCann, they're letting their craft speak for them, serving the story rather than ego. And they're quite the craftsmen, leading us through the book with appealing illustrations. They capture Hawkeye's swashbuckling nature, Bobbi's differently styled bravado and, vitally, the chemistry between them - these two look like they belong together.

If I were to do a spot of back-seat editing (who, me?) I'd give Bobbi back her old, flared mask - the horn-rimmed specs make her look permanently annoyed. And I'd up the colour gradients. Colourist Nathan Fairbairn here follows the style of the mini-series that preceded this ongoing sequel, New Avengers: The Reunion, and Bobbi has lost her visual pop - she used to be a drop-dead gorgeous blonde, now she has drab vanilla hair, almost the same colour as the jaundiced skin tones. What's more, I'd return Clint to his classic Hawkeye costume - think John Buscema-era Avengers - as the current version seems different for the sake of it, and duller.
But these are tiny quibbles around what is a great book. The whole creative team does a great job, including letterer Cory Petit, cover artist Paul Renaud and editors Rachel Pinnelas and Bill Rosemann. The new story is 22 pages long but feels longer, in a very good way. There's plenty going on and it leaves me wanting plenty more.
'New story'? Yup, there's a back-up which, although it uses a collage of old artwork, has a splendid script by Sean McQuaid recapping all the significant points in the lives and love of Clint and Bobbi. And while it's a dual narration, I'm considering it the exception that proves the rule. Rodolfo Muraguchi designs the pages and does a smart job.
DC failed with its attempt to give us a decent superhero series featuring an archer and a bird-themed blonde. Marvel, though, is quickly getting it right. Unlike the Green Arrow/Black Canary creative teams, whose stories favoured archer Ollie while giving Dinah the shaft, McCann and co find both leads equally fascinating. Which means I do too.
As unpleasant a piece of furniture as Marvel's Heroic Age banner is - see how much better that cover illo looks when you can see the full shadows? - it actually fits the feel of Hawkeye and Mockingbird #1: Clint and Bobbi aren't perfect, but they're heroes through and through, caring for each other and the greater good. The book is dramatic, but there's a tone of optimism that's terribly refreshing after the last several years of doom and gloom at Marvel. This is a fine start to what looks set to be a fine series.

Hawkeye and Mockingbird continue their pursuit of a terrorist cell. McCann introduces the new status quo and he draws upon the past to complicate the smoother ride from Hawkeye's and Mockingbird's debut in Enter the Heroic Age.
Hawkeye and Mockingbird reminds me of Burn Notice. The characterization isn't the same. This is a recognizable Hawkeye and Mockingbird, not Michael and Fiona. McCann and the art team instead replicate the velocity of Burn Notice's dialogue and the quickness and professionalism in the fights and stunts. That's not a bad thing.
I'm also impressed by McCann's research and the consistency in the art. Mockingbird performs a makeshift thoracostomy. The Alvarezes and Fairbairn depict blood surrounding a terrorist's wound and coming out of a hollow tube. Excellent. McCann doesn't hammer out exposition for the medical procedure. He picks words that simultaneously increase the drama and describe. He furthermore incorporates Mockingbird's past to explain how she can know what to do.
On the other hand, I'm not happy that McCann dragged out the baggage in Mockingbird's history. I never appreciated that the Powers That Be turned the original Ghost Rider into not just a bad guy but a repellent bad guy. So, raising his haunting of Mockingbird and mentioning the rape doesn't appeal to my good side. I also didn't like that Mockingbird has essentially become a gunrunner. I realize that she must fund her anti-terrorist operation, but selling guns simply recycles them to the wrong people and makes her culpable in any crime committed by those wrong people.
It is, however, just possible that Mockingbird is playing a longer game than appears. The idea presented in these pages is that Mockingbird created the World Counterterrorism Unit out of ex-SHIELD ops and a sleazier version of an old Marvel favorite, but Mockingbird's former M.O. was to infiltrate, observe, and destroy. So, perhaps Mockingbird pulled together these ex-spies to see which were still trustworthy and which needed a one way trip to Riker's Island, or maybe she's tracking the flow of guns to eventually in one fell swoop eliminate the bad guys. Even when putting aside my speculations and noting my objections, there's still much to recommend in Hawkeye & Mockingbird.

Reunited and kicking ass in the Heroic Age. by Bryan Joel
On a couple levels, it's interesting that Jim McCann's new Clint Barton and Bobbi Morse series is called Hawkeye & Mockingbird. On the surface it makes sense since those are the two leads of the series, but a deeper examination reveals some incongruities with the name.
For one, Hawkeye & Mockingbird isn't just a straightforward comic featuring the two heroes fighting crime. The unsung supporting cast is the World Counterterrorism Agency that McCann established in the title's precursor, New Avengers: The Reunion, when Bobbi returned to Earth from Skrull clutches. Clint and Bobbi's missions this issue often use the WCA as an interface through which to run them, and in some ways these backup cast members make the first issue feel a lot like a revival of the California-based team of Avengers that share the WCA's name. Dominic Fortune, a WCA member and obvious McCann favorite, even enjoys better characterization than Clint himself.
Speaking of, it's also interesting that Hawkeye gets first billing in the title, as even though he's the focal point for the issue and provides the narration, for all intents and purposes this is Mockingbird's book. For one, Clint already has regular billing in Avengers; as of this moment, this is the only place readers can catch Mockingbird's adventures. But more importantly, she's a more interesting character since her return. McCann writes Bobbi with an hardened edge and as a bit of an action junkie. She's only ever shown happy when she's throwing baddies from moving vehicles or watching them get impaled with Hawkeye's arrows. We're clearly dealing with a character who's not quite as balanced as she used to be, and a dredging-up of her sexual assault history with the Phantom Rider only serves to reinforce that.
Finally, there's also a touch of irony to the title of Hawkeye & Mockingbird. While they've reconciled for the most part, the pair couldn't be on more different paths. Much of the issue is spent with Bobbi purposely ignoring Clint, or the couple furthering agendas that they're keeping hidden from each other. Readers coming into this series expecting hearts and flowers alongside their arrows and battle staves may be disappointed, but ultimately it makes for better reading. There's some definite friction between the two leads, friction which should develop into interesting stories as it moves forward.
Is Hawkeye & Mockingbird #1 a groundbreaking work? No, but it fits well within "The Heroic Age" initiative, providing some old-fashioned superheroics and enough interpersonal drama to keep it engaging along the way. McCann lays the groundwork for what could turn out to be a very rewarding examination of two heroes struggling to make it work in the midst of the Marvel Universe's craziness.

iFanboy (Story 5, Art 3, out of 5):
Jim McCann runs a clinic on how to use continuity, and, more importantly, why to use it. Right from the start of this ongoing series, Clint and Bobbi are dealing with issues from their past. Even though I've never read the West Coast Avengers comics that are being referenced, there is enough information given to let me understand the crux of the past conflict, and how it carries over into the characters' current relationship. To me, this is the reason that continuity is important -- showing actions that have consequences, and relationships that never quite get off to a fresh start. Jim McCann is rapidly growing into a master of this kind of storytelling, and he has quickly become one of the writers whose work I will always buy. Along with the Clint & Bobbi story in this issue, we get a quick setup of the 'new' WCA team, and a marvelous exchange among Clint, Steve Rogers, and Bucky Barnes. Marvel hasn't been too kind to new series, lately, but I'm hoping and praying this one will have a nice long run.

The Quarter Bin:
Jim McCann teams once more with David Lopez to bring you the continued (hopefully) adventures of Clint Barton and Bobbi Morse. Lopez is a talented interior artist who should thrive on a book like this, and with McCann’s love for the characters, I know that they’re in the right hands creatively. Now all this book needs is our support to survive longer than ten issues. You guys won’t be disappointed. Give it a shot.

Mr McCann has done it again. This was a phenomenal debut issue for this highly anticipated ongoing series.
I'm trying to make this review as spoiler-free as possible, but if anyone wants to be spoiled, i can do that too, lol.

First I would like to note that the artwork is fantastic. The Lopez duo does a slick job with the penciling and inking. Creating a good mix of tones that highlight Clint's over the top superheroics, while still being moody enough to mesh well with Bobbi's more clandestine background.

As far as the story goes, the pacing is perfect. It's just fast-paced enough to constantly keep you interested and yet not feel rushed. For new readers, especially those who missed out on the awesome Reunion mini, They are brought up to speed relatively quickly, and for those who have been longtime fans, there are plenty of awesome fan service nods... (return of the skycycle anybody?) but in no way does it alienate new readers.
Also, for the new readers, there is a short "Saga of Hawkeye and Mockingbird" inserted into the comic right before the awesome (as-of-yet-untitled) Letters Section. The Saga goes over the origins and history of Hawkeye and Mockingbird, cleverly written in the perspective of each respective character that alternated between the two. And both characters personalities shine throughout the entertaining and informative bonus section.
It is obvious that Mr McCann has an intense respect and love for both of these characters, and does them both justice, unlike anything they've seen in quite a while. As a fan of both characters, this series is a dream come true. Fantastic Art, Incredible Writing, and simultaneously accessible to new fans, and deepy satisfying for us old-school fans.
Last but not least, this issue is also special to me because of the fact that my letter was published in the (untitled) Letters Page. EPIC WIN.

Woman's Eye View:
This book was a real surprise to me, as I didn’t expect to like it much, but found myself pretty interested in the story and characters. I come to Hawkeye and Mockingbird fairly clean (I really only know Hawkeye – mildly at best) and this story didn’t ask me to know much. There was definitely stuff going on (history and background) that a fan of the characters would know but I was able to follow the story without it and felt confident that all I needed to know for THIS story would be revealed as necessary. There’s also a pretty great 8-page “Saga of Hawkeye and Mockingbird” history lesson of sorts to bring newbies like me up to speed. I wasn’t expecting to like this but I did. It’s not a home run, but it’s worth a look. I’m going to list it as a TRADWAIT for now (in part because of the price), with the option to upgrade to buy if it continues to impress.

If this weren’t such a short week, I don’t think I would have tried out the debut issue of Hawkeye and Mockingbird, as I hate to add another title to my pull list, but general curiosity and a love for the original Hawkeye miniseries that introduced Mockingbird got the best of me and so I picked it up.
This is a solid debut issue with writer Jim McCann focusing mainly on introducing the current status quo for the characters, including Mockingbird’s new spy agency, while simultaneously setting up two villainous threats.
I think the major draw on this series is going to be Hawkeye, but if you aren’t up to speed on Mockingbird’s history, it is easy to get lost on the details here without reading the retrospective on the characters at the end of the issue.
The main problem with the issue, though, is the pacing. The narration from Hawkeye and the dialogue with all of the characters is super thick, which throws off the pacing, especially during the action-packed moments at the beginning of the issue. That disconnect pulled me out of the issue several times.
McCann has a way with the characters though, as everyone has super strong personalities that really carry this issue. I was especially impressed with the interlude between Hawkeye and both Captain Americas, which had a great “boys’ club” feel that was a nice change of pace.

I haven’t seen much from David Lopez and Alvaro Lopez since their stint on Catwoman, but I’m glad to see that they haven’t lost a step since then.

The level of detail does fluctuate quite a bit on the backgrounds, but the main character work is really solid and I dig their approach to storytelling.
The story is built on a pretty standard grid approach, but the artists put some twists on how those grids are laid out, which kept things fresh throughout the issue.
The only major issue I had with the art is the weird chins that plague the issue. Everyone from Hawkeye to Captain America to even Mockingbird has a Jay Leno-esque chin at least once in this issue, which isn’t something I cared for.
Verdict: Check It. This issue just barely missed the mark for a Buy It verdict, mostly because of the awkward pacing that made it hard to trudge through on my first read-through and the prerequisite knowledge of Mockingbird’s history that you really need to have to get the full extent of this issue. I really dug McCann’s approach to the characters through and the art team worked well with him. This is certainly a fun issue that has me convinced to come back for more as this series has loads of potential.

Living Between Wednesdays:
The other big release for me this week was Hawkeye & Mockingbird #1 by Jim McCann and David Lopez (the team who reunited Clint & Bobbi in New Avengers: The Reunion). This new ongoing has the on-again/off-again couple, well, on again, teaming up romantically and superheroically to fight superterrorists and other assorted baddies. I had high hopes for this one, as Hawkeye is one of my all-time favourite characters (and he’s had a rough couple of years, to say the least), and I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed. This is a fun, fast-paced issue with lots of action, humour, and intriguing subplots involving Mockingbird’s family history and a potential team-up of two of the pair’s classic nemeses (well, one is a cool new take on a classic one, but still). There are lots of fun shout-outs to stuff like the original 1982 Hawkeye miniseries and the duo’s tenure in the West Coast Avengers, but none of it is impenetrable to new readers—in fact, this double-sized first issue comes with a handy backup feature where the heroes playfully narrate each other’s complex together-and-separate histories. This is good to have on hand, when both of your leads have been dead at least once (twice this decade for Hawkeye!). Unlike the similar Green Arrow/Black Canary series from a few years back, this book doesn’t collapse instantly under the weight of tons of ongoing continuity–McCann’s script hits the ground running in its own direction and has a sense of fun, romantic adventure about it. And I seriously hope someone at Marvel has David Lopez chained down, because this guy has some chops. This is one gorgeous-looking book, all smooth lines and easy-to-follow action.
This is probably my favourite thing to come out of all this Heroic Age jazz right now, and I hope it sticks around for awhile (especially with this particular creative team on board). I do have one small complaint–I’m really tired of seeing the word rape in mainstream superhero comics–Bobbi drops it in reference to her ordeal at the hands of the Phantom Rider back in West Coast Avengers. If you must, it’s possible to allude to this stuff without typing what has become the most overused "r" word in comics since "retcon"; Young Avengers Special #1 was a perfect example of this, where we know that something awful happened to Kate BIshop in the past, but it’s never explicitly stated or shown. This is a pretty minor complaint, though. It was a pretty great comic otherwise.

“Green Arrow & Black Canary” “Hawkeye & Mockingbird” is one book of Marvel’s new Heroic Age that really doesn’t have high expectations. On the surface it would seem to be a knockoff of similar characters from another publisher. But Marvel has done their best to make Clint Barton interesting and they’ve been fairly successful. Now in a book of his own with his former wife, it’s time to let Hawkeye shine a little more.
Writer Jim McCann does the titular hero a favor by placing strong emphasis on establishing the supporting characters and by resurrecting the World Counter-terrorism Agency (WCA) from his “New Avengers: The Reunion” run.

There is a certain amount of energy to artist David Lopez’s panels, but some of the angles he chooses seem rather odd. It’s not a downfall to the issue, but is definitely not strength.

Really the book has little strength, but is not poor enough to be brushed aside with vigor. We’ll see where it goes, but titles like these at Marvel perpetually last well past their expiration dates. Hawkeye is already a mainstay in the new “Avengers” title, so how much staying power will he have in his own book?

Hawkeye and Mockingbird no. 1 written by Jim McCann, drawn by David Lopez. So much set up. The openning sequence was a nicely handled action set piece, establishing who Hawkeye and Mockingbird are, how they operate, their history etc. etc. And I thought to myself, "alright, this might actually be good." But then after that one good action sequence, we just get clumsily handled character introductions for pretty much the entire rest of the book. Not terrible, and it might get good in a few issues, but this one was pretty meh.

The book kicks off with a bout of synchronized shooting as henchmen attempt to protect some cargo during a high-speed motorcycle chase. But it’s no use, because Hawkeye pull some grade A action movie tricks and gain the upper hand with many much arrows and aerobatics. The whole thing ordeal comes to a close when our titular heroes stops the van, and attempts to get some answers from one of the men responsible. Only to watch him get shot. Bummer. This leads to the reveal of one of the villains for this arc – an old Hawkeye foe going by the name Crossfire – and propels us into some ongoing troubles. See, while the pair put a happy face when beating down baddies, Clint and Bobbie got problems with communication – communication problems, if you will. And she’s dealing with the stress of running a small group of spies, returning from a Skrull internment camp, and a bit of a rapey past with a ghost cowboy, and Clint is trying to get her to open up by trying to find her family without telling her. Sounds like a solid plan that’s bound to fail miserably: and it does when the answers he gets only digs up more questions. The book ends with another villain throwing in with Crossfire, making it look like our heroes might have a tough go for the next little while. Wouldn’t be much of an ongoing if it looked like things were gonna’ be easy, now would it?
The team from the New Avengers: The Reunion miniseries returns here, and I must say, it appears as though in the intervening time, these fresh faced kids have grown. Or something. Jim McCann’s dialogue is flowing a bit easier than it did with Reunion where words seem to sit awkwardly on the page. Add to that the difference in pacing – the Reunion mini being more of a slow burning, slow moving spy piece, and this one exploding with some tightly choreographed action right out of the gate – and you get something that commands some attention. Maybe not yours specifically, but someone’s. The art by David Lopez is no slouch either – hitting scenes of kinetic action and static talking heads with equal energy, with an talent for moving the story and the eye in the direction it needs to go, when it needs to go there. A solid debut, to say the least – and it should give all of those Hawkeye fans who were hard up for Clint a good book to read month in and month out.

Just as Dark Reign: New Nation introduced the new Hawkeye/Mockingbird dynamic, Enter the Heroic Age teases the launch of the duo's ongoing series. Jim McCann and David Lopez seem to have lost none of their touch in the last year. This story is a great deal of fun that capturs that same "Mr. and Mrs. Smith of the Marvel Universe" feel the original mini-series did. McCann also does a better job of conveying Hawkeye's emotional transition away from his Ronin persona than Avengers #1 did this week. Unlike some stories in this issue, the Hawkeye & Mockingbird tale has no lasting impact, but sometimes fun is enough.

I REALLY want to like The Hawkeye/Mockingbird stories. I do. Romantically involved super-heroes bantering, flirting and kicking ass? Sounds perfect. Maybe it's because I never had much exposure to their relationship pre-Ronin, or maybe it's the writing, but I just wasn't feeling this one. David Lopez's penciling was on-point though, the action scenes were dynamic and easy to follow, the backgrounds weren't lazy...really solid work here, art-wise. I WANT to like this so much that I'm still gonna check out HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD #1 even though the writing didn't capture me this time around.

Our fourth story starts out in Chinatown with some hoods running for their lives. They are soon confronted by Hawkeye, and find out why he’s the best in the world with a bow. After putting one of the guys out cold, the other dude runs, but is soon met by Mockingbird. She puts him to sleep, and then turns her attention to two more thugs who have joined the party. A helicopter is trying to help the two crooks escape, but Hawkeye uses his acrobatics to get aboard and tell the clown to land or get an arrow in his ugly lid. As Clint is tying up some loose ends, we see Bobby talking to someone. She immediately clams up as soon as Clint gets within range of hearing. We don’t get any clues as to who she’s talking to, but we do then see the former wedded couple agree to go on a date, then embrace and kiss. All in all, I think it was decent, but I didn’t order this book because my pull list was getting too heavy. I’ll be keeping an eye on Hawkeye and Mockingbird though. 3/5

Fourth, we see something that I’m sure many comic book fans have been anticipating for a long time…Clint Barton back in costume as Hawkeye! Teaming up the character with Mockingbird results in a great dynamic but McCann also pens an action packed, fun tale that features plenty of exciting moments too. Lopez’s art is well suited to the two colourful characters and he handles the aforementioned action scenes perfectly. McCann also manages to add an element of intrigue into the story that has me interested enough to pick up Hawkeye and Mockingbird next month

Jim McCann writes Hawkeye & Mockingbird the way Green Arrow and Black Canary should have been written. McCann makes Hawkeye's and Mockingbird's partnership fun and sexy. Now part of the credit belongs to the Lopezes, David and Alvaro, for their amazing ability to display smiling superheroes engaging in astoundingly energetic acrobatics, on a motorcycle yet, but McCann leaves all the baggage foisted on the characters by other writers behind and concentrates on the now. This is Hawkeye and Mockingbird dating, beating the stuffing out of bad guys and loving it. Now, this is something I want to try.

One really close friend of mine who is into this crazy thing asked me for a chat and a drawing for the con. Yes, he con me... there's no worse costumers than friends...

At this very last minute I'm still trying to find out what to tell to five hundred hackers that will break into my email and spoil me up, but the story began weeks ago, when I had to do three sketches before approval. This guy is tough, but I love him like that.

What have I been doing?

Last couple of months have been really intense; I went to the U.S., to visit some friends in New York (pictures here) and then some time to Ohio, when I came back I had the pleasure to work on Nation X #1, edited by lovely Jeanine Schaeffer, featuring a short story with Colossus, Nightcrawler and the New Mutants, check the character sheet.

With no time to rest, went to Andenne (pictures here) and then working on Gotham City Sirens #7, which happened to be a Christmas issue, very fun and with the nice discovery (for me) of the pleasures of working with Harley Quinn. Another character sheet.

What am I doing next? A really nice short story with Jim McCann, more details soon.

Story of a cover

Dolmen is a Spanish comic-book magazine that has made me an interview for its next issue, it will appear at the same time as the Spanish edition of New Avengers: The Reunion and I wanted to highlight that making them a cover with Ronin and Mockingbird, here the story from the sketches to the final version.

First, a rough sketch, something tiny to focus the idea of what you want. In the beginning I didn't have clear what to do, so I asked Jim MacCann for an idea, his is the idea of seeing them trough a sniper riffle.

Once I knew what to do, another sketch, to have a clear image of the characters.

Then see if it works...

And then I can go for a final sketch.

I didn't like Ronin's pose so I repeated it.

Final pencils.

At this moment I did this marker sketch to see the volumes and not getting lost while coloring. It's nothing I use to do, but I already told you about my new toys...

Inked cover, see that Ronin's sword is behind Mockingbird now, it was too artificial.

Colored version, it looks better with the crosshairs.

Final version with the logo and everything... It looked good, but I wanted more. I don't use to do this, but I felt there was need for a change, Mockingbird wasn't working as I wanted, too artificial too.

I printed the lineart in blue and redrew her arm, something more martial.

A little bit of computer magic...

And the cover is final and OK and don't touch it anymore!

Yesterday I bought one of those so beautiful Adam Hughes sketchbooks, and saw what he does with the art pens for sketching... and I got some of them too.

They're not what you'd call cheap stuff, but man, you can get really spectacular effects with them, really fast and easy.

This is Javi Pina, my first portrait in years.

To work with this ones you have to work from lighter tones to darker ones...

And finally, the Black Widow from Marvel, the red for the hair and the details is a normal alcohol marker, is not as transparent as the expensive ones but enough for this...

De Messen House

This summer I've gone for my second time to Norway, but this time with the intention of working.

We found this really nice artist's house in the fjord of Hardanger, the most beautiful part of Norway... maybe not, because it's a amazingly beautiful country full of contrasts, from really beautiful to unbelievably beautiful.

The people working in there were very good hosts and I just can't say thank you enough times.

What did I do there? The idea was to sketch some things for a travel book, but it was finally impossible, too beautiful to get my eyes apart of it. But once here I've found somethings to do with what I experienced there.

New Avengers, the Reunion #4, Review

No he tenido demasiado tiempo para ir poniendo las críticas a medida que salían, pongo las del #4 que sirven como final. No he filtrado ninguna, las hay buenas y malas.

"The Avenger Who Came In From The Cold" This final issue of New Avengers: The Reunion sees Clint Barton and Bobbi Morse -- Hawkeye and Mockingbird -- come together to see off the A.I.M. plot that Bobbi has been trying to prevent from coming to fruition since the first issue.
It's a fairly straightforward conclusion that doesn't see the series' terrorist plot go out with quite as much of a bang as I expected from the extensive build-up. However, even if the villain's plot fizzles a little in this closing issue, it still gives McCann the change to stage several compelling action sequences. Mockingbird has a surprisingly dirty fight with her opposite number, we get to see Clint being Hawkeye as opposed to Ronin (which should delight longtime fans of the character), and there's a heavily-populated against-the-odds free-for all at the end of the issue that reminded me of Kill Bill's "House of Blue Leaves" setpiece.
These sequences are enhanced by the artwork of David Lopez, which has certainly improved since the series began. His characters are more consistent, there's a higher level of detail to be found in his pages, and there's a more confident edge to his linework, too. The storytelling is always clear, and that's important in an issue that relies on the artwork to convey many of its action beats -- such as the cool moment in which Bobbi anticipates her enemy's moves and tricks her into teleporting directly into the path of her attack, or the novel way in which Bobbi and Clint defuse the bomb towards the end of the issue.
Most of all, though, I have to commend the book for not giving in to the temptation to provide an easy, pat ending. The two leads don't suddenly abandon the character development of the last few issues in order to give the book a nice, convenient resolution: it would have been easy to end the series' soap-opera storyline conclusively one way or the other, but McCann instead opts to have their relationship reach a certain level of compromise that pays off some of the character-building of previous issues, but also leaves a certain amount of potential open for future stories to take the characters in several possible directions.
If the goal of this book was to reintroduce Mockingbird to readers and give some meaning to her relationship with Hawkeye in the present-day Marvel Universe, then it's achieved what it set out to do. I'll be interested to see whether the characters' new status quo at the end of the series will be reprised for further adventures, either in the pages of New Avengers or in another dedicated miniseries or one-shot. There's certainly a lot of potential here either way.

The final chapter to this miniseries was another fun read, but seemed to lack any definitive conclusion. The cliffhanger from last issue was, as expected, quickly reversed and the villain of the piece never really stepped up to be a credible threat.
However, that doesn't make this a bad issue or even a bad series. The action and plot actually took a back seat for me in favour of the interplay between Hawkeye and Mockingbird - both of which were a lot of fun to read whenever they were together. While I do not have a lot of experience with their previous relationship, I know I like how they are being played together here and hope to see the threads followed up on in the future. Review continues after the jump.
Speaking of the future, one thing that had me a bit puzzled was how this lines up with the duo's portrayal in Brian Bendis's New Avengers title. It seems like McCann had set up a whole new direction for both characters to continue on with and none of it was being reflected in the New Avengers title, which I thought was taking place after this miniseries. It also looked like they wouldn't be Avengers post-Reunion, but if Wolverine can be in 22 books a month, I can overlook any discrepencies for these two. I am, however, hoping McCann gets a Green Arrow/Black Canary-like book for Hawkeye and Mockingbird to follow up on everything he set up here.
However, as I said earlier, this issue falls short in one regard and that is with the conclusion to the AIM dirty bomb business. It just lacked any kind of impact and just felt more like a reason to put Hawkeye and Mockingbird in danger and get them playing off of each other, which, again, I did enjoy, moreso than an actual plot that held up on its own. If you found the characters lacking, the plot would do very little to help interest you in the title.
Verdict - Check It. A solid finish to the miniseries that did a good job explaining how Mockingbird came back, what her state of mind was and set up a new status quo for both her and Hawkeye that I hope gets followed up on by McCann in the future.

June 3, 2009 - Marvel books that offer simple, pure fun in the wake of Dark Reign are increasingly rare. With Norman Osborn in charge, there isn't much to laugh about. Luckily, New Avengers: The Reunion has helped add a dash of fun to the previous four months of darkness. The series hasn't been without its problems, but it's never failed to present an interesting take on the Hawkeye/Mockingbird dynamic from two fresh voices at Marvel.
With all the flashback and Skrull-related material out of the way, Jim McCann is free to focus on his big finish. With Ronin seemingly dead, Mockingbird is all that stands between an AIM scientist and nuclear holocaust. This leads to some more interesting characters moments with Bobbi as she continues to struggle with her inner rage and disassociation from the modern world. The AIM threat continues to serve as a rather hollow one, but that never really mattered. Everything in this series has been about bringing the two ex-lovers back together and seeing how they react to one another. It's all about the character interaction, and McCann nails it once again.
In terms of the banter and the coy little dance played between Clint and Bobbi, this issue is easily the strongest. I didn't dislike the recent focus on Bobbi's life as a Skrull captive, but so much of that flashback material seemed aimed at straightening out her wacky continuity than actually presenting a compelling story. The series works better when it focuses on the romance and espionage fronts.
David Lopez continues to prove himself a great acquisition by Marvel. Besides sprucing up that hideous old Mockingbid costume, Lopez has lent a great deal of visual dynamism and fun that mesh with the relatively lighthearted tone of the story. The only disappointment has been in realizing that Lopez could probably do even better. The best part about the numerous flashbacks were the shift in Lopez's art style from his familiar Catwoman look to something sleeker and more animated. It's a style that could have worked well across the board and granted the series an even more unique tone. But I can't complain with what Lopez delivered.
McCann leaves his heroes at a new crossroads and with plenty of potential for future stories. Whether those stories are picked up in a follow-up project or just in the pages of New Avengers, I hope to see more of the duo. I'm always up for a story that can offer compelling drama and a healthy dose of action without taking itself too seriously. Regardless of what happens with these characters, I think both McCann and Lopez have proven themselves to be creators worth watching.

I absolutely loved this book. McCann has the voices down for these two to a T. Bobbi's growth through these 4 issues has been SO apparent. It's more a story about her than anything, and as someone who's only recently read her stories in West Coast Avengers, I'm officially a fan now.
It works out well, because this story is supposed to fit between the Sorcerer Supreme arc and the next arc of New Avengers, so their status quo isn't completely changed for that book. As far as I'm concerned, McCann can write these characters anytime he wants. And please do it more often!

This was a completely forgettable series that didn't have any really amazing moments that made it worth picking up but nothing that was completely horrible.
The art was a little on the cartoony side. I didn't really care for the action sequences.
The characters seemed about as well developed as the original Hawkeye miniseries, which is to say 80's cookie cutter stereotypes.
Do we really need another head of AIM? The climax of the explosion was pretty unique, but really all of this was used to set up a status quo between Clint and Bobbi that, knowing Bendis, will be ignored and probably done better in New Avengers.

Jim McCann may be better know as the “Assistant Manager of Sales Communication” for Marvel, but if this limited series has proven anything, it’s that he’s got more than enough talent to make it as a creator. A series re-uniting Hawkeye and Mockingbird had all the ingredients to be a massive misfire -- Bobbi’s return during “Secret Invasion” was largely met with apathy and disinterest, and after almost 25 years out of circulation, it’s debatable how many people were interested in seeing her return.
However, McCann’s writing brought out the very best in this situation. The final issue continues as the first three have, casting Hawkeye -- sorry, Ronin -- and Mockingbird as spouses who are also spies in the "True Lies"/"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" vein, with a dash of added superheroics. It’s far better than it has any right to be.
Past issues have shown that McCann is clearly concerned with straightening out Bobbi’s newly-fractured continuity, and this issue is no different. Anyone looking to find out how her personal timeline shakes out will not be disappointed with the information presented in this issue, but far more encouraging is how much effort has been made ensuring that readers are invested in the scenes that mainly exist to plug continuity holes. The emotion successfully carries the weaker moments of the script, and helps the story hit the necessary beats so that we actually feel how they’ve changed over the course of the series. Why can’t all superhero comics get it this right?
Lopez’s art successfully merges the superhero and espionage elements of the script perfectly, with strong storytelling and high-octane, cinematic visuals for the final act of the story -- the final scenes look like they could be taken from any Hollywood blockbuster. It’s rare that a book’s artwork can live up to the expectations a Jo Chen cover creates, but Lopez actually comes up to scratch.
This series has been an unexpected hit, and definitely worth picking up in collected form if you haven’t been buying it already -- without giving away the ending, there’s plenty of room for a follow-up. Marvel would be mad not to commission one. It’s the best superhero action movie never made -- and as we know, good superhero movies should always come back with an even better a sequel.

New Avengers: The Reunion #4 A New Dynamic Duo

June 5, 2009 - With this series, Jim McCann has done a phenomenal job re-introducing us to Mockingbird. Along with that, he's also evolved her character a bit to deal with her imprisonment on Skrull World and her problems with Hawkeye. The series was quite good when it stuck to those concepts. However, The Reunion might have been one issue too long, because most of those plot points were dealt with by the end of last issue.
The only Mockingbird action we get in this issue is a fight scene with an AIM scientist. It is pretty cool seeing her flex her battle skills, but not even close to her using her stalking and intel-gathering ones on Skrull World. We don't get to experience any of her frustration, confusion, or torment that made the first three issues so entertaining. The fight wasn't a total waste though. Mockingbird and Hawkeye's team-up in battle was pretty fun.
Instead of focusing on Mockingbird, a majority of the substance in this issue is dedicated to Hawkeye. As a matter of fact, the last few pages have an internal monologue from him explaining his reasons for loving the woman. I suppose that serves as an explanation of the reasons we should love her too, but I would have preferred figuring that out by myself or maybe Mockingbird giving an internal monologue herself.
David Lopez does an adequate job with the art in this series. Nothing stellar and nothing absurd. His panels with the Mockingbird fight were clear and easy to follow. The characters were appropriately rough looking because girls can't stay pretty while they're fighting despite most artists' efforts. Some of his work looks a little washed out, but that might be more of a coloring problem. Lopez's greatest contribution would have to be Mockingbird's new costume though. Hopefully, we'll be seeing it regularly.
Four issues may have been one too many for this series, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. The espionage action was pretty fun and seeing Hawkeye and Mockingbird fight together was a treat. Hopefully we'll be seeing this dynamic in New Avengers one day.

New Avengers: The Reunion #4 review I have been pleasantly surprised by a few Dark Reign miniseries and New Avengers: The Reunion is one of them. Author Jim McCann had a tough task in front of him – to make Bobbi Morse, a.k.a. Mockingbird relevant. Would anyone really care that Mockingbird returned? Would the gaps from Secret Invasion be filled in adequately or glossed over? Once again, would anyone care? My answer, yes.
Good writing made me not only care, but really like this series, and hope for more. Hawkeye (I refuse to call him Ronin) and Mockingbird reunite to take down an A.I.M. threat. Woven throughout this Mr. and Mrs. Espionage tale is a fantastic, rekindled relationship. McCann provides solid answers to Bobbi’s Skrull abduction, making her a compelling and noteworthy character. Most importantly this is an interesting and enjoyable story.
The chemistry between Hawkeye and Mockingbird is engaging. In between the spy action, flashbacks reveal all we need to know about Bobbi and her feelings for Clint. Like I always say, nothing brings a couple back together like a good fight. Once the dust settles from the series-ending showdown with A.I.M., Bobbi and Clint finally have the heart to heart these issues have been building up to. McCann writes this dialogue authentically and it’s believable.
David and Alvaro Lopez provide the pencils and inks. Overall, the art was average with some shining moments. The more intimate moments between the former lovers were most notable for their softness and passion. My biggest complaint with all four issues is that the colors were too bland and lifeless.
In the end, it was surprisingly satisfying. Mockingbird is back and hopefully she can find a place in the Marvel Universe. Now we just need Clint to drop this Ronin crap. He’s Hawkeye and always will be.

Comic Review: New Avengers: The Reunion (1-4) Reposted from Avengers Tower:
With the last installment of New Avengers: The Reunion purchased and re-read several times over, I can easily say this has been the best new title to be released this year to date. Everything I hoped to see was there, plus some. And no, dear readers, no spoilers from me. I’m not that mean (or nice, depending on your perspective). I’ll only tell you to pick up the issues and read them for yourself. When you’re done, read them again. You’ll find more neat things going on.
The basic story has to do with some of the personal aftermath of the Secret Invasion story, specifically, what Mockingbird’s been up to since she came back to Earth. After she runs off, Ronin goes after her, and with a multitude of good reasons. What he finds out teams him up on a mission with his formerly-thought-dead (ex?) wife and puts them both on one hell of an emotional rollercoaster. Mixed up in that is super spy action, explosions, flashbacks, and the kicking of many many butts.
I know I said in my first review that I thought Jim McCann’s writing was fantastic. I’m going to expand on this. His storytelling is phenomenal, able to flow naturally from one event to the next and involve the reader completely. The characterizations were exceptional, too. For me, if I can feel the frustrations of the characters I’m reading enough to find myself about to talk to my comic book, then that’s pretty darn good. Also, the dialogue is wonderful, fitting perfectly with the action and giving a great insight into the characters and what they’re going through. One thing I do need to mention, and I don’t find many men who excel at it, but he is very good at writing a woman, especially a strong one who has been through her own personal hell. Furthermore, his retcon skills know no bounds. VERY smooth handling of Bobbi’s capture and return. Consider me duly impressed.
Again, the art has been top-knotch all the way through. I’m really fond of the art style David Lopez has. He’s very good at capturing expression and motion and has a great gift for perspective. Some of the scenes are highly immersive because of the angles and perspectives used. The inking and coloring were lovely as well, really bold and brilliant. I also need to mention that the lettering was very easy to read and spaced well. Furthermore, Jo Chen’s covers are gorgeous. I especially want issue #2’s cover as a poster. (Yes, I used it as iPhone wallpaper, too.)
The story is exciting and engaging, and I suggest every Avengers fan go buy all four issues and read them. Heck, you don’t even have to be an Avengers fan. If you like a great story, amazing writing, and fantastic art, you should like this one quite a bit.

El otoño pasado hice por fin un trabajo para una película (para un corto); "Johannes" de Graciela de Torres, no hacía ni ilustraciones de preproducción ni storyboards ni nada parecido, hice unas caligrafías en hebreo para después quemarlas... por exigencias del guión.

La película es un videograma, que es una fusión del lenguaje cinematrográfico con el de la poesía. Está en fase de promoción en las capitales aragonesas, pronto en Zaragoza.

Last autum I finally did a work for a film (a short film); "Johannes" by Graciela de Torres, I didn't draw preproduction illustrations, storyboards or anything like that, I did caligraphys in Hebrew to burn them later... it was in the script.

The film is a videogram, a fusion of the cinematographic language with poetry's. It's in promotion's stage through Aragon's capitals, soon in Zaragoza.

Soy un fan de las libretas Moleskine, son preciosas y muy inspiradoras. Durante este verano, en una época de descanso mental total hice historias en bitono con rotuladores Tombo y sin guión, sólo con ganas de hacer historias. Aquí mi favorita, una pequeña cápsula narrativa, con Ana, la protagonista de Espiral, claro.

I'm a big fan of the Moleskine notebooks, they are really beautiful and very inspiring. Through this summer, in a time of mental holiday, I did stories in duotone using Tombo crayons and with no script, just wanting to do stories. Here my favourite one, a little narrative capsule, with Ana, the main character of Espiral, of course.

1. It's seven in the afternoon, looks like the heat will never loosen.
2. The parked cars reflect the fire that falls from the sky.

1. Humidity... I've been sweating all day long, at the office the air didn't work...
2. Pollution, or haze... or whatever, darkening the horizon, can't distinguish anything.

Mujeres en proyección.

De vez en cuando me gusta hacer cosas fuera del cómic, experimentar técnicas diferentes a las que uso normalmente. Últimamente hago carteles para un instituto de aquí, de Zaragoza, la experiencia es muy divertida, hago lo que me da la gana y no presento factura. Creo que salimos ganando ambos.
Sometimes I like to do works outside comic, experiment with other process that the ones I usually use. Lately I do illustrations for a High School at Zaragoza, the experience is very entertaining, I do what I want and don't bill them. I think we both win.

Esto de rebuscar por los discos duros... he encontrado la portada del número 4 de Espiral, de cuando salió en La Cúpula, allá por 1999. Por culpa de mi inexperiencia y un mal entendido, la portada que salió publicada no era la correcta, la correcta era ésta.
This thing of searching in the old hard disks... I've found the cover for Espiral #4, published under La Cúpula, back in 1999. Because of my lack of experience or a missunderstanding, the published version wasn't right, the good one was this.

Treinta números non-stop, mi personaje favorito de DC, un equipo creativo perfecto... el trabajo del que me siento más orgulloso a día de hoy, Selina Kyle es Catwoman.
Thirty issues non-stop, my favourite DC character, a perfect creative team... the work I feel more proud of at this very moment, Selina Kyle is Catwoman.

Aún está demasiado reciente para mirarlo con perspectiva, pero ha sido una época que me ha marcado mucho, en este proyecto lo del trabajo en equipo se llevó hasta las mejores cotas; treinta meses sin fallar ni uno... todo un récord.
Still is too close in time to look at it with perspective, but it's been a time that has marked me a lot, in this project teamwork arrived to its best; thirty months in a row... a record.

Y para acabar, el Joker, una delicia para trabajar, se dibuja solo.

Al final han tenido que ser once y me queda la sensación de que no enseño las mejores.

Fallen Angel was my first log time work in DC Comics, a book with character equity that has become a cult series, right now is published at IDW. In Spain is published by Norma Editorial.
